The peninsula was partitioned in 1948, and the state of South Korea established, with forces of the United States in the south and the USSR in the North.

The capital city of Seoul is a good example of this. It is a big, dynamic city, but keeps the traditions of the ancestors alive. Old temples are still well visited, and the many palaces of former rulers remind the visitor of the past.
